Indie Air Plant Artist: Kara Cross, Mist and Sea

Updated: Dec 7, 2019

Meet Kara Cross, the creator and artist behind Mist and Sea. Kara creates earth-friendly air plant decor and has an air plant studio in the San Diego Made Factory.

indieland: How did you first become interested in air plants?

Kara: I received my first air plant as a gift a few years ago, and was fascinated by this plant that didn't need any dirt! It seemed so out-of-worldly to me, so as I saw them pop up at stores here and there, I began collecting them. I loved learning about their specialized way of survival (absorbing water through their leaves instead of roots), and was AMAZED by how many different species there are!

indieland: What do you love most about what you do?

Kara: I LOVE being my own boss! After working for large companies, I value getting to set my own schedule, and create my own structure of working. Of course, the close second is getting to share these amazing pieces of nature and my creations with others. I love getting to know my customers at markets!

indieland: If you could only use three words to describe your business/products, what would they be?

Kara: Serene, natural, & unique.

indieland: Why do you believe it is important for people to shop independent and local this holiday season?

Kara: I personally find it fascinating and invaluable to know where my product comes from. To know more about what went into product creation, and who/what I'm supporting by my purchase. With small businesses, it is much easier to find out this information, as well as establish a connection with the small business owner. I love having a face to a business, rather than a huge corporation. More often than not, the heart of the small business onwer shines through in their product, and that is hard to find purchasing from larger stores.

indieland: Describe what it means to you when someone buys a product from you/your business.

Kara: I am so grateful for every single one of my purchases. Whether it be online or in person, each item sold goes out with good intention, with the hope of spreading nature's beauty to homes, offices, and other living spaces that need some life! Because I create each product by hand, I can ensure the highest quality of plant and design to share with my customers. It is truly a creation from me to you.

You can check out Kara's designs and shop her products on Etsy. If you're in the San Diego area, visit her during the Second Saturday market at the San Diego Made Factory, or make an appointment to stop by and visit her space!
