indieland's 30 Days of Christmas - Day 29 - Heading to the Movies

Visit these Chicagoland independent movie theaters for the holidays!

Catching a movie with the family over the holidays is a tradition for many, whether you go on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or the days after. We have two movie theaters in the Chicago area that we love, and both are independent. While the big theaters have the fancy seats, these theaters are full of great people and charm. Consider visiting these two spots and support the local community.

Logan Theatre in Logan Square

Logan Theatre opened in 1915 and renovations in recent years have kept much of its history and original design. The theater also houses a bar and lounge that serves a full range of drinks and treats. In addition to the usual popcorn and soft drinks, we encourage you to sample the fried mac and cheese balls! They also make a pretty good Moscow Mule. Like many of the large theaters, you can have food and alcohol in the theater, but the bigger theaters just can't beat the vibe in this space. It is cozy and inviting, and one of my favorite places to watch a movie. Check out their schedule for Christmas Eve and Day -- they'll be open and showing late night flicks.

The Wilmette Theatre in Wilmette

The Wilmette Theatre is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that provides entertainment and education to the community. Unlike more traditional theaters, this one tends to screen independent movies not being shown elsewhere in the Chicagoland area and it hosts a range of events. One of our favorites is Conversations with Weigel, which are spiritual discussions hosted by Chicago journalist Jenniffer Weigel. She's hosted health and wellness experts, energy healers, and even psychic mediums at the theater, and you always leave learning something new and valuable. We highly encourage you to check out one of her events! The Wilmette Theatre is not open on Christmas Day, but it is a great place to check out any day of the week.

We hope you enjoy your trip to the movies at either of these independent spots, and be sure to support independent theaters in your area!
