indieland's 30 Days of Christmas - Day 18 - Song of the Month - J.I.D "Off Da Zoinkys"
Hailing for Atlanta, J.I.D has been one of the hottest up-and-coming artists for the last couple years. He dropped the stellar new project DiCaprio 2 a few weeks ago. One of the many highlights is "Off Da Zoinkys", which stands out for its ridiculously catchy production and memorable verses from J.I.D.
"Off Da Zoinkys" is the rare track that simultaneously comes off as an anti-drug anthem while also denouncing Ronald Reagan's notorious "War On Drugs". Just four tracks later J.I.D is trading verses with Method Man and Joey Bada$$, riffing on the virtues of cannabis. And really, that is refreshing to hear. There aren't many songs, across all genres of music, that offer a balanced, reasonable view on drugs. Just like anything else, there is a grey area worth considering.
So many artists use drugs as a crutch, and in some cases, the results can be deadly. In the wake of Mac Miller's recent passing (who J.I.D was preparing to tour with, by the way), it is important that artists such as J.I.D use their influence for good. When it sounds as exciting as "Off Da Zoinkys" does, he makes a pretty convincing case for sobriety.
