indieland's 30 Days of Christmas - Day 13 - Event Spotlight: One of a Kind Show

There are countless options for holiday shopping in Chicago. You can stroll through the Christkindlmarket in the Loop, battle the crowds on the Mag Mile, or visit your favorite neighborhood and browse local stores. One of the best options is to stop by the One of a Kind Show (shout out to yesterday's Indieland Weekend Guide!) held in the Merchandise Mart, where over 600 independent artists and vendors set up shop for four days in December. This year the show is held from December 6th-9th. While the crowds can be overwhelming at times, you can have a successful, fun experience if you do it right!

I was able to stop by during the late afternoon on Friday, which I figured would be a good time to avoid peak crowds. While it was still crowded, it was filling up fast as 5pm approached, so I think planning an earlier visit is a wise move. That being said, the Merchandise Mart's 7th floor is massive, so there is plenty of room for everybody!

Now on to the best part: shopping! After browsing several interesting jewelers and artist's stands, I found myself drawn to Gary Bradley's paintings. His use of color was unique, and I spotted a gift right away in his Paint Brush People!

Next up was another unique find in The Porcelain Garden! They specialize in lithophanes, which are lighted porcelain art. They had an impressive display caught many peoples eyes.

Other highlights included fun apparel at Megan Lee Designs, mesmerizing horseradish flavor combinations at Grate Roots, and countless more.

Shows like One of a Kind are very important for small, independent businesses to get the word out that they exist. Whether you have an hour to spare or an entire weekend free, try to make it to the One of a Kind Show this weekend in Chicago! You will not leave disappointed.
