Chicago Indie Weekend Guide - Small Business Saturday Edition! November 24, 2018
Updated: Nov 23, 2018
Discover and support independent businesses on Small Business Saturday!
You've likely heard about (and participated in) Black Friday, but do you know about Small Business Saturday? I was never someone who loved Black Friday, and I usually avoid shopping in stores that day as much as I can--just too much chaos! In contrast, Small Business Saturday is all about supporting the smaller, independent, local stores, and it is a celebration of what they offer to their communities. Trust me, while it can be busy, it is much more peaceful! So I hope you'll consider spending some time (and money) Saturday at your local stores, or supporting local and indie artisans. Below, I've compiled some of the neighborhood activities I've heard about (and I'm sure there's sooo much more, so if you don't see your neighborhood on here, it is worth a Google search). I've also included a holiday market where you can check out multiple indie businesses and artists at once. Enjoy, and please send us an email if you have activities you think should be added! Send a note to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
10 am – 5 pm
Head out to this local market to discover unique pieces from Chicago artisans. According to their website, the "Made in Chicago Market is a celebration of innovation, resourcefulness and beauty in local craft and design."
The event is free, but you'll need tickets to guarantee your entrance to the event (click the link above). And get there early -- the first 500 guests receive a free Made in Chicago Market tote. I'm excited for this one because I know I'll discover so many local indie artists!
Andersonville is celebrating Small Business Saturday with their #AlwaysAndersonville Shop Local Passport and a Holiday Trolley! You can pick up your passport, which features more than 75 local businesses, from the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce staff starting at 11AM at George’s Ice Cream & Sweets (5306 N. Clark). They will also be available at participating businesses and on the Andersonville #ShopSmall Holiday Trolley. If you purchase a product or service at 10 or more of the businesses, you could be eligible to win a prize!
The Holiday Trolley runs from 1-4PM during Small Business Saturday. You can view trolley stops here.
ChillFest is how Wicker Park and Bucktown celebrate Small Business Saturday. Now in its sixth year, the event features over 60 local musicians playing live, acoustic "living-room sets” in local storefronts throughout the neighborhood. The day celebrates the live music history and creative roots of the neighborhoods while showcasing emerging musical talent and local businesses. You can view the schedule here.
For Small Business Saturday, the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce has coordinated three hubs where you can pick up a bag full of amazing promotions and goodies from Logan Square Small Businesses. Each HUB will also have a unique limited-edition holiday ornament for you to paint and take. Visit all three HUBs to get all three ornaments: Logan Square Centennial Monument, Chicago Flag, Chicago "L" Train Car. Click the link above to find the three hubs and see other deals happening in the area.
Lakeview's Small Business Saturday includes holiday tunes and prizes! Select businesses will feature local artists performing holiday tunes from 1-3 pm. And if you pick up a Lakeview Holiday Passport and collect stamps at local participating businesses, you could win one of several prize packages valued between $100 - $1000.
Each Small Business Satuday, the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce creates a Holiday wonderland, complete with festive decorations, carolers, ice sculptures, and a tree lighting ceremony. And there will be drinks for children and adults: The DANK Haus German American Cultural Center will be serving German glühwein, beer, and hot apple cider in Giddings Plaza from 11am-7pm.
From 11am-5pm on November 24th there will be two free trolleys for shoppers, operating between Ravenswood’s commercial corridors. The trolleys will make nine stops in and around the neighborhood, taking away the stress of parking as you move between them! View a list of deals from participating businesses here.
Enjoy your Small Business Saturday!
