Chicago Indie Weekend Guide September 7-9, 2018
Discover and support independent businesses and art at these Chicago events
There are so many great events to check out this weekend! It seems indie events and festivals are picking up a bit in September . . . perhaps it's that back-to-school energy? Regardless of the reason, we're happy there's so many opportunities to support indie businesses, art, and the local community. If you're heading out for food, drinks, or shopping, this will help you keep your dollars going toward local communities, small business owners, and other great causes.
Friday, September 7, 6 to 9 PM
Infiniteus Rocks and Juice is both an organic juice bar and a crystal shop. On Friday night, they're celebrating the opening of their crystal-themed art show. The show features more than 15 local and national artists. The juice and crystal shop will both be open during the event if you want to get a drink or to check out some gems and crystals. We've been to this shop before (post coming soon), and their juices are delicious. They even make their own nut and seed butter that is a must to try if you decide to stop in.
Saturday, September 8, 3 to 5 PM
57th Street Wines is a cool local wine shop in the Hyde Park neighborhood, not too far from some great indie bookstores, 57th Street Books and Powell's. We first discovered this shop through an author event and wine tasting last year (for Bianca Bosker's Cork Dork). We found the space, the selection, and the staff to all be fantastic. They host regular wine and beer tastings, and this weekend, they're hosting a spirits tasting. While we haven't sampled spirits there, our experience sampling and buying wine and beer leads us to believe they know what they're talking about when it comes to a good drink!
September 8 - 9, 11 AM - 7 PM
Renegrade Craft is back for its 16th year in Chicago. The show features 300+ emerging and established craft vendors. Vendors are divided into three categories: Makers & Designers, Food & Drink, and Experiential & Installations. You can enjoy a cocktail and get snacks from nearby food trucks while you shop. You'll be sure to discover something new here that you might not see anywhere else.
September 8-9, starting at 10 AM
The Lakeview East Festival of the Arts features more than 150 juried artists who will be selling and showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, furniture, jewelry, and much more. The artists, musicians, and vendors for the fesitival are all selected by the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce. To celebrate the festival, local indie bookstore Unabridged Books will be hosting a storewide sale on the 8th and 9th. Everything in the store will be 10% off!
September 7-9, starting at 11 AM
Open Books West Loop hosts some great sidewalk sales, and we can speak to that since we've been to several of them in the last year! They have the sale rain or shine -- you just have to go inside to browse all the discount books if it's raining. Books are $3, Kids Books are $1, & All Used Books inside the store are 25% off. It's a great deal that supports a great cause: literacy in Chicago.
Enjoy your weekend, and support some indie businesses in the process!
