Chicago Indie Weekend Guide November 9-11, 2018

Discover and support independent businesses and art in Chicago this weekend!

The temperatures are dropping, but that doesn't mean you should say inside this weekend! Here are some great opportunities to shop local and indie as you prepare for the holidays.

The Dial Bookshop 1 Year Anniversary!

Friday, November 9 5-8 PM

The Dial Bookshop on South Michigan Ave in the historic Fine Arts Building is celebrating one year this weekend! This charming bookstore is a tribute to the rich literary history of the Fine Arts Building, once home to The Dial literary magazine and Browne's Bookstore. The shop will be celebrating their first year with wine and treats. If you don't stop by Friday and haven't yet been to this bookstore, try and drop in Saturday or next week. We think they have an impressive selection of used books.

Neighborhood Toy Store Day (Various Locations)

Saturday, November 10

There's an Independent Bookstore Day that we love to celebrate, and now there's a Neighborhood Toy Store Day! Given the struggle we've recently seen big retailers like Toys R Us go through, this certainly seems like a day worth celebrating. Much like neighborhood bookstores, boutiques, or cafes, these stores can be magical local gathering places, for kids and parents alike. Here's just a few local stores celebrating this day with a wide range of activities and special deals. We encourage you to seek out ones in your neighborhood and pay them a visit. Even if you don't have kids, perhaps there's a niece or nephew you still need to buy a holiday gift for? Plus, a local toy store is the perfect place to go if you want a break from adulting. Who says we can't spend a little time playing too?

2nd Annual Holiday Craft Market

Sunday, November 11, 11 AM - 4 PM

Western suburbanites (and Chicagoans willing to venture out) will enjoy this craft market in Oak Brook at the Marriott hotel. It features more than 30 local vendors selling handcrafted goods. A great spot to pick up gifts from small, indie businesses!

Also going on this week: The "Love Your Bookstore" Challenge! The event starts Saturday, November 10 and runs through November 16. To participate visit your local bookstore (we encourage you to visit your favorite local independent), and take a photo of yourself holding a book you will be gifting or a book you want to receive. Then post the photo to social media using the hashtag #loveyourbookstore, and you'll be entered to win prizes. Don't forget to tag your local bookstore! (If you're planning to visit Dial Bookshop this weekend, you could definitely snap a photo there!)

Enjoy your weekend, and support some indie businesses in the process!
