Chicago Indie Weekend Guide November 16-18, 2018

Discover and support independent businesses and art in Chicago this weekend!

Hope you're in the mood for some shopping! Forget about Black Friday -- save up your energy for this weekend's holiday markets (and Small Business Saturday next weekend, of course).

Winnie Cooper Boutique First Year Celebration

Friday, November 16, 5-9 PM

We've told you about Winnie Cooper Boutique in Roscoe Village before, and this weekend, it celebrates its first year in business! On Friday night, there will be raffle prices, food & drinks, and special discounts at the store. Whether you can make it Friday night or not, be sure to add Winnie Cooper Boutique (and the many other fabulous shops in Roscoe Village) to your list for Small Business Saturday.

SHOW of HANDS Holiday 2018 Show

November 17 & 18 (Preview Night on November 16)

I stumbled across this show while browsing Instagram (which, by the way, is how I discover so, so many indie brands and events), and I really want to check it out! The show began back in 2013, and I love how they describe themselves in the about section on their website: ". . . SHOW of HANDS was created to be more than just another craft show. It's a commitment to independent design. It's the presentation of high-caliber work in a professional way. It's the understanding that craft can be couture and handmade can be high-end." Yes, yes, and yes! This show features more than 100 local and independent artists, designers, and craftspeople, may of them from Chicago and the surrounding area. This is definitely worth checking out for unique gifts and simply inspiration. There's something exciting about being around that many indie and small businesses owners in one space!

Holiday Sip and Shop: A Craft & Vendor Showcase

Saturday, November 17, 11 AM - 5 PM

If you're in the mood to shop and have the stamina to attend multiple holiday markets, then we suggest also stopping by the Holiday Sip and Shop event at The Kedzie Inn on Saturday. This event features 12 small businesses from the Chicagoland area selling handmade items. The event is free to attend, but you can support the venue by buying a drink or snack to fuel your afternoon of shopping.

Bookstravaganza -- An Indie Book Fair!

Sunday, November 18, 3-7 PM

Visit The Reveler on North Damen this Sunday for an indie book fair hosted by Tortoise Books. The fair features several Chicago indie presses, including Rose Metal Press, featherproof, and 7Vientos. Prior to the making of indieland, I had a literary website called LitCity312, and many of these presses were featured on that site. I also had the great pleasure of interviewing many of their founders, and they all have great stories to share. I'm still a little sad I never got around to sharing all of those stories on LitCity, but that's why I'm encouraging you to check them out now, and I hope to feature them all on indieland someday! If you can't make it on Sunday, you can also catch a preview of the show on Saturday at Hopleaf from 12-5PM. This show will feature another set of indie presses and there will be author readings.

Enjoy your weekend, and support some indie businesses in the process!
